Michelle- I appreciate the openness of this piece, and sharing yours and your son’s journey throughout. More people need to read this. Hope you’re well this week? Cheers, -Thalia
It is such a struggle for so many kids and teachers. It can look so bleak. Bless you for continually trying to improve education. I hope your son will thrive in whatever new adventure awaits! If not in this generation, maybe our children's children will benefit from the changes that so many are trying to make now in education!!
Having taught at HS and MS levels (all since late 2020, so during COVID), I saw it is hard enough for a teacher to make a big impact, let alone a parent/guardian. Plus, trying to improve on the status quo brings suspicions and complaints from many stakeholders, often unexpectedly. We found out over the past year that our 4-year-old has special needs due to a rare brain disorder that inhibits his speech and walking, so there is just no way I would work in a teaching position where there is significant additional unpaid work required on evenings and weekends. But, that is how it is for so many teachers now, especially in ESE. I always ask teachers if they work fewer or more than 40 hours a week and no one ever says fewer, even before the pandemic, and it's only gotten worse since then.
